Best Gas Mileage Sports Car | Honda CR-Z Mileage

The new Honda CR-Z holds several records. It is the worlds first two door hybrid sports coupe and also the first hybrid car to offer manual transmission instead of CVT. The Honda CR-Z is also the best gas mileage sports car. Honda's idea for the CR-Z was to combine good fuel economy with sports handling in a package that's fun to drive, unlike most of the best mileage vehicles out there. The result is a compromise between sports car performance and fuel economy, although it has to be said that it's biased towards fuel efficiency as we shall see.

Honda CR-Z mileage is as high as it is because it only has a small 1.5 liter gasoline engine working in combination with a 10kW electric motor powered by NiMh batteries. The car is a mild hybrid.

The best gas mileage sports car has figures of 31 miles per gallon for the city cycle, 37 for the highway and 33 miles per gallon for the combined cycle. More on the Best Gas Mileage Sports Car...

Good Gas Mileage Vehicles - Suzuki Alto / Nissan Pixo

Small high gas mileage vehicles are very appealing financially and environmentally but far less so from a safety perspective. Well the Suzuki Alto is one good gas mileage vehicle that also promises to be very safe despite its minute size.

The Suzuki Alto has more going for it than safety though because its also one of the cheapest cars out there. New cars are getting cheaper and cheaper and the price of the Suzuki Alto is amazing. Of course fuel economy is another of the Alto's trump cards at just 4.8 litres per 100km. It appears the Alto is a very competitive small vehicle then. Read more...

High gas mileage car makers becoming kinder to the planet

High gas mileage car makers now need to do more than manufacture green cars. They must also be environmentally friendly entities themselves. When the first hybrid Prius's went on sale it didn't take people long to comment on how bad for the environment the building and transporting of cars is. Many people believed it would be far better for the environment to keep an old car than buy a new car, even if it was a Toyota hybrid. To their credit Toyota quickly took this criticism on board and progressively made building not just the Prius but all their cars more and more environmentally friendly. Lets take a look at some of the things Toyota have done in this regard. More...

Best Gas Mileage Cars - Fiat 500 Lounge

The success of BMW's economical little Mini has resulted in other manufacturers rekindling iconic best gas mileage cars of the past. Fiat launched a modern day version of the classic 500 in 2007 and like the Mini, it is proving very popular, combining the winning blend of retro styling with contemporary luxuries.

The original Fiat 500 brought motoring to the masses just like the Mini. It was small, very efficient, and very cheap. The relaunched version has stuck with the characteristics of the original, including the cheap price. The same can't be said for the Mini. The top of the range Fiat 500 is the Lounge and its just two-thirds of the price of the top of the range Mini Cooper S.

Sipping only 6.3 litres per 100 km the Fiat 500 Lounge is truly one of the best gas mileage cars around. This fuel economy is produced by a turbocharged 1.4 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine which has 74 kW of More...

Best Gas Mileage Cars - 2010 Toyota Prius

When they first released their hybrid efficient Prius, back in 2004, Toyota were really ahead of the pack. The Prius has been one of the best gas mileage cars on the market ever since. When it first came to market the majority of people had no idea how a hybrid car even worked. Other car manufacturers were amazed at the technology that was packed into the Prius. This car was the hybrid trailblazer and it would be some time before it would have competition from other hybrids. Toyota still lead the pack in hybrid efficient cars and their latest rework, the 2010 Prius has lots of new high tech features and options as well as offering the best gas mileage for a Prius yet.

The Prius was first released with a 1.5 litre 4 cylinder gas engine but many customers were unhappy with the slowish acceleration. The latest Prius has a larger 1.8 litre gas engine producing 73kW in combination with a 60kW electric motor. The car is still sluggish from a standing start because only the electric motor is used at slow speeds, but when the gas engine kicks in at about 25 mph acceleration is comparable to other family saloons.

Slightly bizarrely the new 1.8 litre engine returns better gas mileage than the old 1.5 litre unit. This is definitely in part because the more powerful engine doesn't need to work as hard. The hybrid engine is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission which works to keep the gas engine in a narrow rev band thats best suited for maximum fuel efficiency. The Prius is the best gas mileage family car on the market. It has amazing fuel economy - 51 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. Only tiny cars with very small engines can beat these figures. This is one efficient car that you can be confident will return the kind of gas mileage advertised without having to press the gas pedal with a feather. The 2009 model Prius had slightly worse fuel efficiency at 48 mpg for the city and 45 mpg on the highway. Tailpipe emissions for the Prius are similarly best in class - only 89 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

The Prius suspension is very soft and as a result there is quite significant cornering lean. In a straight line the ride is great, but the suspension does need stiffening up for the corners. The steering feels fine but you have to go easy on the skinny tires (the narrow tires help gas mileage) because there's not heaps of grip. The Prius has a tight turning circle - great for narrow city streets. The brakes on the Prius are good but very sensitive and need some getting used to. Toyota's hybrid is not a bad car to drive but neither will it blow you away.

The unique looks of the Prius haven't changed very much since it was first released and after six years it needs a major facelift. When the car was initially unveiled, being one of the best gas mileage cars and having cutting edge technology, its futuristic looks suited it. More...

Laser ignition could enhance high gas mileage cars

Aug 09: Researchers based in the U.K. have discovered that laser ignition instead of ignition via spark plugs can improve the efficency of an internal combustion engine. If laser ignition were incorporated in todays high gas mileage cars it would certainly improve them further.

High Gas Mileage Cars: Hyundai Getz

In 2002 Hyundai first released the little Getz and this car has gone on to be one of the best high gas mileage cars. Hyundai managed to combine a rock bottom price with reliability and good looks and its been a winning formula for Hyundai who are now outsold only by the Toyota Yaris in this category of car.

The efficient little Getz recently had a facelift but they've actually changed little except for some minor cosmetics. Hyundai are following the famous saying 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it'. While its competitors in the sub-compact car market are designing more and more futuristic shapes Hyundai has chosen to stay with the conservative and clean cut styling of the Getz. It works though. The Getz is a good looking car.

An overall rise in quality of Hyundai over the last few years have helped sales of the Getz. Hyundai first released the Getz at a time when the company had a reputation for cheap and nasty cars. The Getz and other cars have helped to reverse this image. The company previously had an image of cheap, unreliable and poor quality cars. Their image now is one of reliability, good build quality yet still inexpensive cars. The Yaris is the only comparable car that sells in greater numbers than the Getz, but the Getz is gaining even on the Yaris. More...
